Last October, I had the opportunity to get together with some friends from my old church and play at a fund raiser where we opened the evening by playing a set of old jazz standards. After that, was a nice dinner, followed by a somewhat more grooving set of blues/rock.
As a final project for his music production school, Jeff Stein (keyboards & trumpet) called us back together to help him with his final project by recording a song. You gotta love getting studio time on student hours. We had Studio A at the Conservatory of Recording (I think that was the name of the place) at our disposal from 7:00pm to 3:00am.
It took a bit to get all the equipment set up, mic’d, patched into the board, adjust the sound, volume, etc. and then start recording. After about three takes with the full band and two more with guitar and bass (while at the same time laying down the vocal track) we called it a night and broke everything down at about 2:00am.
I can’t say I didn’t love it, though. It was so much fun being in such a professional environment. That was a long way from the 4-track recorders that friends have brought in the past to do some rudimentary recording. Plus, we got a few pictures…
Getting my kit together.
Everyone else was in the main studio. Only I was in “isolation.”
That’s Darrel, Jerry and Cameron tuning up gear and getting ready.
Cameron getting his fingers warmed up and Darrel tuning his guitar.
Here’s the 56-channel mixing board.
Before the mics.
After the mics. I counted…11 microphones. My kit doesn’t even have 11 pieces!!
Gotta love analog!!
Jeff, checking things over on the board.
A few more shots of equipment in the control room.
Cameron, Jerry and Darrel. It was about 1:00am at this point. We were getting a little punchy.
I figured I’d “help” out by making a few adjustments of my own.
